Design Principles TASK 2 GCD60804

TASK 2: Visual Analysis & Ideation

Visual Analysis is a way for us to understand more about the visual elements in an art that used by the artist. This method is divided into 3 phases:

1) Phase 1: Observation

Looking into the visual and describe by indentifiying what are the elements in the design directly from our own POV before searching more information deeper on the other sources.

2) Phase 2: Analysis

After observing, we need to analyz by using the indentified elements to create our own statement and also by incluiding design principles that we found in the visual.

3) Phase 3: Interpretation

In this last phase, we describe more by combining what we found from the observations with the facts that we need to search by found out from other sources such as what is the meaning behind the arts? the history behind of it? and what is the purpose of the design.

So here is my visual analysis for Johanna Goodman's digital collage "The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, Plate No. 425":

Phase 1 (Observation):

Fig 1.1

This potrait digital collage has vintage surrealism theme with a "giant" human in it, and it has some kind of border line around the frame. The design also have somekind of lion statues, flowers, butterflies, and different types of birds that placed quite balance in each side. Baby pink color on the hair, corset, and the boots is quite giving an accent to this design. The background of this potrait has classical muted color which giving a classy "renaissance era" potrait of digital collage. There are six different materials forming the ballgown. Flowers on the statue, the fan and also as his tattoos on his hand giving him more femine. (110 words)

Phase 2 (Analysis):

What caught my intention at first was the variety of elements that joined together creating unity (Fig 1.2) and harmony from the visual, the way that how the different piece of the elements such as the unique dress that has different types materials forming the ballgown, how the human body is from different piece of visual creating unique collosal, adding statues, birds, flowers, and butterflies making it looks even aesthetics. This "giant" human placement is in the middle make it symmetrical (Fig 1.3) to each other side, plus other elements is spread evenly. The way that the artist played with the size of the human,by emphasizing (Fig 1.4) the small head, small feet and very big body which making it as the focal point for this whole design by create it a big difference proportion tha the normal size of human body. Since the background have neutral muted color, makes the collosal more pops out because of the more contrast (Fig 1.5) color that he have. The proximity (Fig 1.6) the space and the placement that Goodman used for each elements is very thoughtfull to avoid clutter, with ample negative space around the creature to highlight it, while nearby elements keep the focus and create balance. (197 words)

Phase 3 (Interpretation):

Fig 1.7 The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, Plate No. 425

Fig 1.8 The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, Plate No. 288

Fig 1.9 The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, Plate No. 47

This collage is one of  "the catalogue of imaginary beings" collection from Johanna Goodman and made in 2016. There are no specific meaning behind this particular art, but Johanna said that these collection were all inspired by wide specturm, starting from Magical Realism, Surrealism, and Symbolism, also from different culture and materials that exist around us. She spend all of her childhood mostly playing paper dolls and also fashion magazines, and by this collection she is able to dress up her own dolls with her own iconic way. Most of her artwork is female because she is a woman and also a feminist. Also the reason why all of her artwork are giant women it is because she doesnt like how women standard in fashion is very skinny and "weak", she prefered to make them look bigger and "stronger" in her design. The pieces of elements that created all her master pieces are mostly from different magazines, galleries, and notable entities like The Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York, West Elm, Habitat Skateboards, and the Smithsonian and also some are from her photographs. Sketches:

Sketch 1

In here im using R.A Kartini as my muse, since she is one of the independence heroes that fight who advocated for women's rights and female education in Indonesia back then. The colorful flowers contrast on her hair, often symbolize growth, beauty, and renewal and also symbolizing how her ideas were revolutionary and full of life, bringing color to a world that needed change. In here she is hugging other feminisme activist from Indonesia indicating her that her fight for women's rights continues to this day.

Sketch 2:

My next sketch is inspired by Athena since she often symbolized as a feminist icon because she’s a strong, smart woman who blends wisdom and strategy, breaking away from traditional gender roles and showing that women can be just as powerful and intelligent in a world dominated by men. By applying some "modern" pieces on Athena's garment, it shows how women continue to embrace multifaceted roles and challenge traditional norms, while carrying forward the ideals of strength and justice.

Sketch 3:

Lastly, this is my third sketch that insipired by Amanda Nguyen who got raped during her last semester learning about austronout in Harvard and becoming an civil rights activist. The snake hair was inspired by Medusa who also have simillar case with Amanda. And she is using armour represented her fights for the rights of sexual assault survivors, making sure their voices are heard and protected, since she has a a nonprofit organization called rise which was started to protect the civil rights of sexual assault and rape survivors.

Feedback:
After discussion, we decided to use the first sketch. He told me to "play" with the materials and colours, also made make 2-3 various options first and then discuss it with him again.

Reflection:
In this task, i found out that i love Johanna Goodman's art, mixing an "abstarct" pictures but still have meaning value within it which mostly are about feminism made me realize that we can implu deep messages even in abstract visual.

Intercultural Design GCD61304

 Intercultural Design - Project
(E-Portofolio)

The Module Information Booklet for this Module:

-Lectures-

• Culture & Design •

We live in a visual information culture. Visuals are powerful persuasive medium to provide most of our information bout the world.

40% of people respond more to visuals than to text
90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual
Visuals are processed 60,000x times faster in the brain than text

Visuals are:

1. Everything that can be seen
  • Wide definition, all-inclusive including nature (but nature is not culture) unless there's meaning & representation attached to it.

2. Everything produced / created by humans that can be seen
  • Produced / created by human for the purpose of visual representations that has functions, content, communicative purposes

Designers need to be aware of:

1. Cultural nuances
2. Symbolism
3. Context

To create designs that are inclusive and resonate with diverse audiences.

Design Significance

  • Able to identify the social, cultural & political sphere where the design elements reside
  • By understanding the significance of the graphics in its cultural studies, philosophy, sociology & origin history
Fig. 1.0 Design System Sphere

Fig. 1.1 Design System Pyramid

Cultural sensitivity in design goes beyond aesthetics, it also encompasses:

1. Functionality
2. Usability
3. User Experience

Design Sensitivity

1. Culture Sensitivity Awareness

(a) Symbolism and Imagery
  • Certain symbols / images may carry different meanings in different cultures
  • Be mindful of potential cultural interpretations to avoid unintentional misunderstandings / offence
(b) Colour Considerations
  • Colours can have cultural significance
  • Meanings may vary across societies
  • Understanding the cultural association of colours can help designers make appropriate choices
(c) Typography & Language
  • Choosing font and text styles that are culturally appropriate is important
  • Considering language variations & ensuring accurate translations is crucial for reaching diverse audiences

2. Addressing Culture Sensitivity

(a) Inclusive Design
  • Strive to create products & experiences that are accessible and inclusive for people across various cultural backgrounds, different abilities & needs

(b) User Research
  • Conduct thorough user research (ethnographic studies & diverse groups of user testing)
  • Helps designers gain insights into cultural preferences & behaviours

(c) Localization
  • Adapt designs to specific cultural contexts
  • Can enhance the relevance & acceptance of a product / service

(d) Cultural Awareness Training
  • To develop a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives & sensitivities

-Progress-

Week 1

Today is our first class for this module, and its started with an introduction for the module with Mr Asrizal and continued with Ms Noranis explaining about Culture & Design. She explained that culture and design always connected, if there is design, there is culture and vice versa. Also, when making a design we should do RESEARCH,  not only to help creating design according to the target market, conducting RESEARCH can help us to create designs that do not offend any culture thereby reducing conflict.

After that, they asked us to make a grup consisting of max 6 people and my group consiting of  Jordon ( the group leader), Eric, Pei Jiun, Keryn, Abigail, and myself.

Week 2

This week my team and i finally decided that we are going to use stained traditional european window glasses as our idea to develop and applied to wind chimes, coaster and mirror frame. But after disscusing with our mentor, sir charles, we got a conclusion to change some of the everday object and also we still using the stained glass idea but combine it with european and asian motifs, and as the result our initial ideas are:

  • Lamp/Lantern
  • Mirror Frame
  • Modern PC Case

Fig 2.1 Lamp Idea
Fig 2.2 Mirror Frame Idea

Fig 2.3 Modern PC Case Idea

Week 3

In this week, we finally done with our idea presentation about implementing stained glass in everday design, and after submitting the online presentation on teams, we are doing an offline consultation on friday and as the result sir charles choosed the modern PC case as our final idea particullary the one that has chinese pattern. we also do presetation by online zoom meeting.

Here is our proposal presentation:

Week 4

Since this week is "Data Collection" week, there is no class. We decided to do online survey by google form to gained information that will help guide the design process and make informed decisions about aesthetics, functionality, and user preferences. In addtion, we also doing online research, because we didn't found anya place nearby to do the offline research. For the online survey so far we already have more than 20 responds that we can use as our data for next task.

Week 5

This week we start and finished our data collection presentation and also our research. We had a consultation to Sir Charles abour how will we execute our last task which is task 3 that told us to make a tik tok video. We were quite struggling to gathering ideas for the videos, and at first we are planning to use digitally moc up of the pc case, but after considering Sir charles idea which making a physically PC Stained Glass case, we decided to make it and use it as one of our video part.

This is Our Data Collection Presentation:

Week 6

After deciding to make the PC Case mock up, we started to make it this week by using some plastics colored sheets, infraboard which recommended by Sir Charles, coloured marker, glue, etc. This is our video timelapse of our progress making the PC Case:

Week 7

This last week, we finally finished our project and here is our Final Presentation:

-Feedbacks-

• Week 1 •
Briefing of our task.

• Week 2 •
Sketches is there doesn't mean that you have to sketch it. The sketch can be in the form of the whole point we put. It just to demonstrate to you the idea of an ideation.

• Week 3 •
Stained glass is for pretty places if we used it on coaster, it just turned cheap. The idea about Pc case is kind of interesting can keep going with that. Besides, The research statement we wrote is actually the research question so need to change it.

• Week 4 •
No class for week 4.

• Week 5 •
For the TikTok video, can make a physical mock up for the stained glass Pc case.

• Week 6 •
No class for week 6.

• Week 7 •

No class for week 7.

-Reflection-

Working on this project was a really great experience for me. It wasn’t always easy, especially with everyone’s busy schedules, but our group leader did a great job of keeping us organized and on track. One thing I realized early on was that while the stained glass PC case was beautiful, we had to rethink how to make it more functional and appealing to a wider audience. The feedback we got from the survey was really encouraging and showed that there’s potential in the idea, even if it’s a bit niche. Overall, I learned a lot about teamwork, balancing creativity with practicality, and how important good communication is in making everything come together.

Design Principles TASK 1 GCD60804

Task 1:Exploration

The Module Information Booklet for this Module:

Design Principles:

1. Contrast

Contrast in design means using different visual elements in a composition resulting an emphasis also visual interest. It could be use in terms of shape, colour, size, texture, and more.

Fig 1.1 Tony Ward Spring Summer 2024 Couture Collection.

From this collection, we can see that the green lime and also the texture of lime green ruffles cascading color giving a contrast of the lining popping up in lime green to the dress.

2. Gestalt Theory

A set of principle that related to pyshcology which talking about how is human vision towards the elements, patterns and the parts of an visual.

Fig 2.1 Gestalt Theory

   a. Principle of Similarity

Similarity is when a group of elements that have the same characteristics to each other such as in colour, shape, texture, size which creating a visual that is easy for human categorized by the similarity

Fig 2.1 Aelis Couture Spiring 2020

As we can see, the dress looked similar to animal picture which is called Tomopteris. Starting from he way of the dress trying to copy the wing wave of it and also it has a similar structure from the animal.

    b. Principle of Continuation

This principle explain that human eyes tend to see a design that has their "flow" (line, curve, path) rather than seperated visual elements.

Fig 2.2 Iris van Herpen Couture Fall 2022

It is cleary seen that this unique dress has almost white color fabric that flow all around of the dress also on the middle part of the clothes got white "bone" that spread.

    c. Principle of Closure

Principle of Closure design  has a missing part of  elements making it incomplete but actually creating a complete visual.

Fig 2.3 A.W.A.K.E Mode Spring 2023 Ready to Wear

Circles on the dress were gather up but still leaving some gaps between the other circles making it a closure looking dress, however the dress still look finish.

    d. Principle of Proximity

Proximity is basiclly about the elements placement, the related elements are placed closer by overlapping or grouping them into an area.

Figure 2.4 Philip Lim Pre-Fall 2017

This monochrome look has proximity principle, but how come? well we can see that actually the base for the top is a long shirt with black and white strip pattern then layered with the white top and only the  bottom of the skirt also have strip black and white pattern, while  the skirt has black colour.

    e. Principle of Figure/Ground

This principle is almost simillar with the Closure Principle, Objects are naturally viewed as either prominent in the foreground or receding into the background. They can either draw attention as the main focus (the figure) or blend into the backdrop (the ground).

Fig 2.5 Rebecca Rimmer Graduate 2014 of Fashion at University of Central Lancashire

This dress actually has black basic boxy long shape, but with the yellow dress illustrastion making the dress has "two" looks.

3. Balance

The Principle of Balance is about the visual distribution in a design which create a harmony in it towards the elements placement wheater either it is symetrical or asymetrical.

    a. Symetrical Balance

It has balance arrangement of the elements creating a symetrical design, it can also be a approximate symmetry which is a design that is equivalent with different configuration,

Fig 3.1 Iris van Herpen, Fall 2022 couture

It is clearly seen that this haute couture has a symetrical balance from head to toe with unique bone structure and flowy fabric on the dress.

    b. Asymetrical Balance

Opposite to symetrical balance, this typical of balance has unequal visual composition design giving more various and compelling to the design. It could be one part of the design has more dominant element and the other side has more simple side.

Fig 3.2 Central Saint Martins Fall 2015

We can see that there is an imbalance in this look, on the right side is a short dress with white and the ruffle on top but on the left side we can see that it is a fitted jumpsuit with a hole on the pants and the ruffled is at the pants part of it.

    c. Golden Ratio

It is from a mathematical concept called phi that can bring harmony balance and structure to the visual of the design, and it is often represent by the shape of seashell.

Fig 3.3 Viktor & Rolf Spring 2009

It is very obvious to see that this look has a golden ratio from the shell sleeve that often to represent golden ratio.

    d. Rule of Thirds

It is a composition guideline that mostly found in the photography which it has three part that divided into nine equal parts using two horizontal and two vertical lines.

Fig 3.4

In fashion, there is also rule of thirds which is a way to styling by diving our body part into three parts (top, middle, and bottom)  so it can enhance our appeareance.

Fig 3.5 JW Anderson Collection

4. Emphasis (dominance)

This principle is focusing to create somenthing that is dominance visual to the part of the design so can draw more attention to the viewers towards it.

Fig 4.1 Pierre Cardin Haute Couture 2012

Even though its seems like a basic fitted golden dress, the dramatic circle on the sleeve draw attention so much making this dress interesting.

5. Repetition (pattern n rythm)

Creating pattern and rythm in this design with variousity in the visual is very crucial to keep the design intersting.

Fig 5.1 Issey Miyake Fall Ready to Wear 2011

This read to wear look has a boxy 3D pattern all over it.

6. Movement

Design that has "movement" composition on the visual that give the viewers an illusion as if the image is moving.

Fig 6.1 Issey Miyake RTW Fall 2016

Another work of  art from Issey Miyake, by using moire pattern on this look giving an optical illusions that make the audience things that the look has moving illusion.

    a. Hierarchy

This principle basically is arranging the component of the design by prioritizing base by the the importance information to the least in the visual.

Fig 6.2 Seoul Fashion Week 2015 Poster

    b. Alignment

Placing the design components in a certain edge line or even center collumns with different posisition creating a neat yet still aestethics visual.

Fig 6.3 Fashion Week Poster

7. Harmony
This principle has a concept combining the same "vibe" of elements in one visual design creating a design with unique aesthetics.

Fig 7.1 Ajoyo Patchwork Maxi Dress

This strapless dress has caught of my attention because of the various patchwork on the dress creating a on dress with unique look without looking messy.

8.Unity
It might sound similar with harmony but actually unity principle is more about the variety of elements that work together in a visual creating a wholeness in a design.

Fig 8.1 Rave Review fall 2022

This look may look "abstract" but actually for me because of the various fabric and color that used on the look creating an eye catching outfit.

9. Symbol
A mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object, function, or process, e.g. (Oxford Languages)

    a. Pictorial Symbols
A symbol that using detailed image simillar to what it is represented.

    b. Abstract Symbols
Opposite to pictorial symbols, it is using less detailed image but still mirroring the actually object.
   c. Abitrary Symbols
This symbol isn't representing to any object but has an actual meaning and usually it is using shape and various color.

Fig 9.3 Givenchy Logo
10. Word & Image
Using the right word and image in a design could help us to communicate ideas easier but it is important to choose the correct word and image so it wont produce any missunderstanding.

Chosen Artwork:

Figure 11.1

The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, Plate No. 425

Artist : Johanna Goodman
Year : 2016
Medium : Digital Collage
Size : -

Extraordinary weird! That was my first impression when looking this piece art and after do a little bit research, i found out that Johanna Goodman is the one who made this digital collage and all of her arts have the same concept which is a colossal blend of digital collage, vintage illustration, and whimsical surrealism. Although the elements that used in this image are seems quite random such as  the butterflies, statues, the birds and also the dress using from different piece of dress that been gather together, it still creating a wholeness of a fashion look. It is also clearly seen that the principle of asymetrical balance is used alot in this visual because the distribution of each elements and the dress are unevenly but yet still look harmonious. Also, by playing the size of the "person," such as having a small head, hand, and legs but having a giant body which is the dominance of the visual able to draw more attention to the audience.

Feedback:

Week 1: In Progress

Week 2: Sir Charles suggested me to use fashion visual examples for my task, since im                       taking fashion major.

Week 3: He told to adjust the picture size of my example to make it bigger so the reader can identify the design princle easier.

Reflection:

After changing my examples to fashion visual, i just realised that this task might help me in the future especially when doing the fashion deisgn because from this i learned that there are many aspects of design principles that i can use in my daily life as a designer especially fashion design so i can make different kind of garment by exploring the design principle.
