Design Principles TASK 2 GCD60804

TASK 2: Visual Analysis & Ideation

Visual Analysis is a way for us to understand more about the visual elements in an art that used by the artist. This method is divided into 3 phases:

1) Phase 1: Observation

Looking into the visual and describe by indentifiying what are the elements in the design directly from our own POV before searching more information deeper on the other sources.

2) Phase 2: Analysis

After observing, we need to analyz by using the indentified elements to create our own statement and also by incluiding design principles that we found in the visual.

3) Phase 3: Interpretation

In this last phase, we describe more by combining what we found from the observations with the facts that we need to search by found out from other sources such as what is the meaning behind the arts? the history behind of it? and what is the purpose of the design.

So here is my visual analysis for Johanna Goodman's digital collage "The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, Plate No. 425":

Phase 1 (Observation):

Fig 1.1

This potrait digital collage has vintage surrealism theme with a "giant" human in it, and it has some kind of border line around the frame. The design also have somekind of lion statues, flowers, butterflies, and different types of birds that placed quite balance in each side. Baby pink color on the hair, corset, and the boots is quite giving an accent to this design. The background of this potrait has classical muted color which giving a classy "renaissance era" potrait of digital collage. There are six different materials forming the ballgown. Flowers on the statue, the fan and also as his tattoos on his hand giving him more femine. (110 words)

Phase 2 (Analysis):

What caught my intention at first was the variety of elements that joined together creating unity (Fig 1.2) and harmony from the visual, the way that how the different piece of the elements such as the unique dress that has different types materials forming the ballgown, how the human body is from different piece of visual creating unique collosal, adding statues, birds, flowers, and butterflies making it looks even aesthetics. This "giant" human placement is in the middle make it symmetrical (Fig 1.3) to each other side, plus other elements is spread evenly. The way that the artist played with the size of the human,by emphasizing (Fig 1.4) the small head, small feet and very big body which making it as the focal point for this whole design by create it a big difference proportion tha the normal size of human body. Since the background have neutral muted color, makes the collosal more pops out because of the more contrast (Fig 1.5) color that he have. The proximity (Fig 1.6) the space and the placement that Goodman used for each elements is very thoughtfull to avoid clutter, with ample negative space around the creature to highlight it, while nearby elements keep the focus and create balance. Phase 3 (Interpretation):

Fig 1.7 The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, Plate No. 425

Fig 1.8 The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, Plate No. 288

Fig 1.9 The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, Plate No. 47

This collage is one of  "the catalogue of imaginary beings" collection from Johanna Goodman and made in 2016. There are no specific meaning behind this particular art, but Johanna said that these collection were all inspired by wide specturm, starting from Magical Realism, Surrealism, and Symbolism, also from different culture and materials that exist around us. She spend all of her childhood mostly playing paper dolls and also fashion magazines, and by this collection she is able to dress up her own dolls with her own iconic way. Most of her artwork is female because she is a woman and also a feminist. Also the reason why all of her artwork are giant women it is because she doesnt like how women standard in fashion is very skinny and "weak", she prefered to make them look bigger and "stronger" in her design. The pieces of elements that created all her master pieces are mostly from different magazines, galleries, and notable entities like The Metropolitan Transit Authority of New York, West Elm, Habitat Skateboards, and the Smithsonian and also some are from her photographs. Sketches:

Sketch 1

In here im using R.A Kartini as my muse, since she is one of the independence heroes that fight who advocated for women's rights and female education in Indonesia back then. The colorful flowers contrast on her hair, often symbolize growth, beauty, and renewal and also symbolizing how her ideas were revolutionary and full of life, bringing color to a world that needed change. In here she is hugging other feminisme activist from Indonesia indicating her that her fight for women's rights continues to this day.

Sketch 2:

My next sketch is inspired by Athena since she often symbolized as a feminist icon because she’s a strong, smart woman who blends wisdom and strategy, breaking away from traditional gender roles and showing that women can be just as powerful and intelligent in a world dominated by men. By applying some "modern" pieces on Athena's garment, it shows how women continue to embrace multifaceted roles and challenge traditional norms, while carrying forward the ideals of strength and justice.

Sketch 3:

Lastly, this is my third sketch that insipired by Amanda Nguyen who got raped during her last semester learning about austronout in Harvard and becoming an civil rights activist. The snake hair was inspired by Medusa who also have simillar case with Amanda. And she is using armour represented her fights for the rights of sexual assault survivors, making sure their voices are heard and protected, since she has a a nonprofit organization called rise which was started to protect the civil rights of sexual assault and rape survivors.

Feedback:
After discussion, we decided to use the first sketch. He told me to "play" with the materials and colours, also made make 2-3 various options first and then discuss it with him again.

Reflection:
In this task, i found out that i love Johanna Goodman's art, mixing an "abstarct" pictures but still have meaning value within it which mostly are about feminism made me realize that we can implu deep messages even in abstract visual.
