Introduction to Fashion Design (DST60604)

TASK 1 (Basic Shirt Detailing Compilation): Week 1-Week 3

Week 1 (24 September 2024) :

Even though this class started at 2 pm, I still excited to listen to all of  Mr JR (A.k.a Mr Jasmi Rejab) explanations especially about “the shirt” project which will be our first project for this semester and I can’t wait to show my journey in this blog. We also started to do our very first task which is gathering some pics  to be our inspo to help us to do “the shirt” project. During searching some photos, I don’t know why but I felt like a dream, I still can’t believe that I’m taking fashion as my major and now I’m doing one of the task. Wishing all the best to me and my friends <33

Week 2 (1 October 2024) :

Today were a pretty chill day with Sir JR, we were told to continue the task 1 which is gathering the photos so that we can compile them all at the end. Mine was already half way there but still need some new ideas especially for epaulettes which is kinda challenging for me to find the right photo for me. Sir JR also told us to find a fashion illustration figure which is very exciting to me because as soon as I collected all of the photos that I needed, I can immediately continue task 2 using the fashion illustration figure that I have chosen.

Week 3 (8 October 2024) :

Today we were starting to compile our shirt ideas to our figure, but what is the most exciting for me is when we need to “make” our own fashion figure by modify the references. And after 3 weeks, I just realised that the presentation shirt compile is like a “dictionary” shirt for us which i thought it was like a proposal :) Sir Jr told us also to prepare 20 figures with different fits, and for me it is something exciting but also I know will be tiring, but yeah, “Welcome to the Fashion World” they say. I’m just hoping to be less procrastinating when I have a bunch of things to do.

TASK 2 ( Research and Design Construction: Photomontage)

Week 4 (15 October 2024):

After 20 figures for only a week, Sir Jr explained what should we do next, which is another 20 figures :) He firstly  explain about what we gonna do with the figures and he told us that there are two stage in developing idea for the design. Thats why from the first 20 figures, they will be 4 figures that are chosen to be develop and each figures should be developed 5 times. After that we should do mind mapping then moodboard. After checking my figures, turns out I need to do more revision in order to have 4 chosen figures, because some of my figures had big differences concepts. I hope in the future I will be more pay attention to the things that I draw so I won’t do it twice which could impact to the unproductivity.

Week 5 (22 October 2024):

Finally today almost all of us starting to do mindmap and also moodboard. First, Sir JR choose 5 figures between 20 figures that we made and determine our own subject matter, mine is Origami. It is inspired by the boxy and the basic folds, (stay tune for the results ;)) then he explained how to make a technical drawing by using a template from his PPT and trach use how to made a moodboard which he tell us to not make it too crowded so it will look nice. My mindmap is on the half of the way and im still working on my moodboard, and i havent started my technical drawing, hopefully i will started it real soon 🤞🤞

Week 6 (29 October 2024):

In this week, finally JR and i discussed about the 5 technical drawing that i have done and we choosed 2 final design that i will make. 1 garment for female and male, which is preety exciting for me, although as i think more, i think i need to modify it later while drafting it later with ms melina because the current design seems kinda not enough for me. He also explain to us about hpw to right the conceptual idea and  thankfully i already done it also with the moodboard. even though it may seems that i have done a lot of things, actually it is not yet done. my next task is making the final look of the two garments that are chosen by me and JR also starting my presentation about my collection, hope and pray i can finished it on time.

FINAL PROJECT

Week 7 (5 November 2024):

After choosing two final looks and transfer it to technical drawing for my project, Sir JR explain to us to also give a little description on some part so that can be easy to understand when we are moving to pattern making with  Ms Melina. He also mentioned we can started to search a fabric sample for our project, and the fabric should be off white color because he said it will looked better under the lights. He suggested us also to choose an easy fabric for us to sew, something that is not that thick and thin, like canvas or linen( but it is quite pricy), also not and seaa through fabrics because it is hard for us to sew. Im actually planing to use fabrics that is similar to canvas since i dont want to burden my self with the hard sew fabric (i have tried once before so i know how difficult it is), and hopefully i can go fabric sample hunting with my friends earlier so next week (week 8) at wednesday i can ask sir jr's opinion about it.

Week 8 (12 November 2024):
INDEPENDENT LEARNING WEEK

Week 9 (19 November 2024):

This week, im entering the step which i need to coordinate with Sir JR and also Ms Melina to startingboth of my looks, since there are only few weeks left before we need to present our projects. Honestly it is quite a nerve, because it is my first time doing this kind of project and im afraid to do a mistakes on the process, but im always tying to keep confident while doing it,wish me luck :). So this week, i started to make the master plan for my first look, and so far it is almost finish. Later on i will make the pattern construction by break down the pieces and  adding the allowance, after getting approval from ms melina, i will cut it and continue to do my second look. i was struggling in making the pocket pattern and also it is quite confuse for me about how to break down the pattern, but gladly Ms Melina with patient helped me. Sir JR also told us to scouting models with a criteria like in the video, well i think i will have no  problem in scouting the female, but  i dont know how about the male... since i think it will be kinda lawkward(?)  Im targeting to finish the pattern construction for my first look this week so next week i can start to do the second look.

Week 10 (26 November 2024):

In this session, sir JR finally determine the order for who is going to do the presentation by withdrawing, and thanks God i got 11, which is at 2 January 2025. I found out that something wrong with my look 1 which is the male garment after sir JR ask me to do the loose fit using the pattern construction. Turns out that the shoulder point of the front and the back isnt same, so i need to adjust by adding more on the back side of it. After that i started to cut out the look 1 pattern. I also started to transfer some of my look 2 into pattern construction. Im planning to do the look 1 on calico and start it as soon as possible.

Week 11 (3 December 2024):

Today's class, i finally started to sew my second look calico after "long time" dealing with the first look.  I started by making the fabric manipulation for the yoke, and it is not that hard for me since I've practice it with paper, the complicated part is when i need to gather it with my back part of the shirt which is quite confusing me at the first time because it got few layers, but at the end im able to manage it. Then, i continue to sew and i finished the second look from the calico in the next day. At first i was not sure with the result but when the model was wearing the fit it change my perspective towards it, i was like "acatually it is not that bad" and hopefully i can do a great job in the real fabric.

Week 12 (11 December 2024):

Today JR remind us to submit our presentations and re-explaning how to do it, after that, i continued to sew my look 1. Ms melina helped me by thoughtme how to sew the hidden placket. Today it felt kinda exhausting since im struggling to sew the collar part since the fabric is too thick. My needle broke more than 5 today...... and i almost hurt my forehead when one of the needle broke and jump to my face. That was kinda scary but at the end i manage to sew the collar eventhough i change the collar with lining also adding facing on the inner part. In this process i struggle to sew since the thickness of my fabric which thought me to not to buy fabrics that is thick for shirt. One of my seniar, Arman,  he noticed that im struggling to sew, so he gave me a needle machine size 18 which is for thick fabric and it helps me alot. Now all i need to do left for my first look is the pocket, hopefully i wont be struggling as when im doing the collar.

Week 13 (17 December 2024):

This week, i finally "finished" my second look, i just need to sew few little things tomorrow and it will be fully done, since when i tried to sew for the finishing, the sewing machine suddenly error and cannot be used. There are few challenges while finishinh this look, first is i forgot how to sew a proper hidden button so i need to ask ms Melina for a few times, second also the collar, since in this design im using collar  stand which had a few adjustments not like the collar i usually make. All i need to do left is washing my looks since it has many sketches left from the tracing paper.

Week 14 (24 December 2024):

In this week 14, after hand sew the sleeve facing part in the inner of the look 2 and also adding hook n eye on the collar , I finished both of my looks, and since my clothes didn't look quite as white as they did when I returned to my hometown, I went to Indonesia to have them dry cleaned. The final presentation is all that's left to do, and I'm hoping it goes well. I hope I'm lucky.
